Confirmed, I'm seeing the same issue.

The responsible upgrade on my (testing) laptop is this one (from
dpkg.log):

  2016-05-04 20:55:18 upgrade notmuch-mutt:all 0.21-3 0.22-1

The same upgrade also broke this setting from my .muttrc:

  # set sidebar_delim_chars="/"

which I had to comment out as it's no longer recognized. But I've no
idea whether this is related to the first-letter bug or not.
