The bluetooth group isn't used for device nodes (so far as I can see) but in the bluez D-Bus policy (/etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf). That also has an 'allow' rule for users currently logged in locally, so again it's not necessary to add desktop users to the group.
