I'm not able to find exactly what fixed this. I can't get this to crash after commit https://git.gnome.org/browse/evince/commit/?id=cb3d4b28 but that commit alone is not enough to fix it. It looks like it was unintentionally fixed while updating some toolbar and menu code.
