found 810982 net-snmp/5.7.3+dfsg-1.1 tags 810982 + patch thanks Sorry, I didn't realise that on kfreebsd we now need to add a Build-Depends: pkg-config. Surprisingly it wasn't being used already or brought in as a depedendency of something else - but I had it in all three chroots I tested in.
