Package: packagekit
Version: 1.1.0-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I'm running GNOME. If I got this right, then GNOME Software pilots
PackageKit to download updates, and eventually update the packages.

Updated packages are downloaded and stored in:

  /var/cache/apt/archives/

I just clicked the "Restart and Update" button in Software. As a
result, my system rebooted and everything was updated.

My system is now fully up-to-date:

  # apt list --upgradable
  Listing... Done
  #

However, the packages have been left on the system:

  # du -sh /var/cache/apt/archives/
  309M /var/cache/apt/archives/

This has the potential to completely fill up the disk. In fact, that
happened to me a couple of weeks ago, but then I didn't have time to
figure things out, and I just cleared that directory as a stop-gap
measure.

Now that I had time, I made sure that I could reproduce this issue:

1. I ensured /var/cache/apt/archives/ was empty
2. I hit the refresh button in Software, which checked for updates
and downloaded the packages, prompting me to reboot and install
   updates
3. I complied, rebooted and installed the updates
4. I verified that the folder is still full.

I hadn't done updates for some time already, which is why there were
so many things to download/update.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't happen on Fedora (which uses
PackageKit's Hif backend), so I would venture a guess that the issue
is in the Apt backend used on Debian.
