The rationale is the same as for Iceweasel. The main difference is that Thunderbird is now a community-driven project. R. Kent James, Chair, Thunderbird Council, agrees that Icedove changes and track records matches the expectations of the Thunderbird Council. Just like with Iceweasel, the packaging work is excellent, patches are forwarded upstream when relevant, the specific patches applied to Icedove are clean and makes sense.
