hostname from DHCP may work, but not every DHCP server provides one. Yes, I did new installation, and got "debian" as hostname. That's the same problem which Peter requested, ask for the hostname in d-i/network-console. >From implementation side, as you explained before, network-console requires network set-up in early stage, so it may be hard to set up hostname a second time.
