Could you file a bug upstream about the issues you found using it with
Java 8 class files?

Your bug report was probably only seen by the inactive maintainer, when
filing removal bugs against packages with inactive maintainers it is
usually pointless to send it at all without CCing at least upstream and
the wider Debian community around the language or package (debian-java)

Since the package wasn't orphaned I doubt anyone would have even
noticed these indicators of low quality so it isn't surprising no-one
stepped forward to help work on it.
