No wonder: "%O" only got introduced very recently in 0.7.5-1. It also
works fine with that version.

after having had some conversation with Florian by private mail, we
came to the conclusion that his bug report was caused by the following
two real issues:

* The documentation on https://aptitude.alioth.debian.org/ only covers
the newest version of aptitude. We might want to put up
documentation also for other versions in currently supported Debian
 releases.

* Even on Debian unstable, "aptitude -F '%X' search '?installed'" just
exits with return code 255, but gives no error message at all and
hence causes confusion about what happened if a user tries escape
sequences only supported by newer versions of aptitude or if there's
a typo in an escape sequence.

The latter definitely should be fixed in aptitude. The former is a
nice to have in our documentation update infrastructure at
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/aptitude/aptitude-documentation-fetcher.git/

Thanks for the report.

It will now emit an error about the column definition being wrong, not
only with "search" but also with "versions" and some other places in the
curses interface when it was not doing it yet.

Marking it as +pending.

Cheers.
