The problem is a incompatibility between GTK+ 2.8 and Gtk-Qt Engine*. I've
patched the package but it is unfortunately still pending upload. I do not
have the time to build a package for Etch since pbuilder has some weird
issues here that would take quite some to investigate. However, here are some
instructions for how you can build the package yourself:

Append

  deb-src http://vemod.net/slask/gtk-qt-engine/ ./

to your /etc/apt/sources.list and issue the following commands:

  apt-get update
  apt-get build-dep gtk-qt-engine
  apt-get -b source gtk-qt-engine

* The issue can probably be solved temporarily by downgrading GTK+.

Let me know if there any more problems,
