Dear Maintainer,


Using the nouveau kernel driver always results in a black screen upon
framebuffer handover approx. 15 seconds into boot. The hardware is a GeForce Go
6100 with an MCP61 southbridge on a Gateway MT3419 laptop. The backlight
continues to brighten and dim as the X server starts, but nothing is displayed
on screen after nouveau is initialized. The only workarounds are to use vesa
with nomodeset or to use the NVidia proprietary driver. To get a working
display, nomodeset must be added to the kernel command line. This seems to be a
known problem, but has never been fixed. All distros and all kernels show the
same behavior. (I believe OpenSuSE Leap worked correctly one time, but I don't
have it available to test again.)

I have detailed dmesg logs that can be attached, and I will mark in the logs
the last thing I see before the screen goes black.

Obviously, this is a fairly serious bug, since the use of nouveau is made
impossible on certain chipsets. Also, it is obviously upstream, since it
happens in all distros.
