Can you verify that all MATE packages installed are at 1.12 upstream versions? It's quite likely that testing users end up with a mix of different versions of MATE packages since different packages migrate at different times from unstable. This is why I think it's generally a bad idea to use Debian testing or unstable on a production machine unless you know what you're doing and can fix issues yourself. We are actually receiving several bug reports with issues which are to be expected during the development release and will just sort out themselves with consecutive package updates.
