the 8.1 > version is known to dislike clients with version < 1.7, so you have to ask Blaucload if they disabled this "feature" manually. I spoke with the developer of owncloud and they say, that there are no real technical reasons , to disable older version, they only want you to use more recent version, because the newer ons are better. The other thing to test if you can just use the version out of backports. regards, sandro
