I agree it would be nice if one can set both background and text colors for the panel, so I have created an upstream bug for that. Feel free to comment there! If you have selected the dark theme in gnome-tweak-tool, then you can set the background (back) to black in the preferences dialog (the text color will remain white). -- Dmitry Shachnev
