I'm pretty sure systemd delivers the start and stop request successfully to the sysv init script. I suspect that it's the sysv init script which doesn't properly stop or start the xdm process. What's the status of xdm.service before and after the systemctl restart xdm? -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
