The rules aren't that strict, actually. For example, we have fontconfig rules to substitute Helvetica with e.g. Arial and vice-versa -- which aren't strictly the same, but similar enough to replace each other. The same could be said about the relation between Droid and Noto. Vasudev, if you like, I can hack up a fontconfig snippet to redirect Droid to Noto. the other direction doesn't make any sense IMHO.
