I actually copied them back, although if journalctl is concerned with the on-disk layout I'd be mightily surprised! Note that the symptom was an ever-growing heap without any IO syscalls.

Just to confirm, did systemd get updated in between the time you could
still reproduce it and now?

It hasn't been updated since, although checking dpkg.log I see that systemd was upgraded (226-4 -> 227-2) earlier on the day that I first noticed the bug.
