Thanks for reporting this issue. Like the incorrect custom font path reported in #799473, this issue also needs some changes to the upstream setup.py to support the same custom paths as the mapnik build. I've added a patch to support the LIB_DIR_NAME environment variable as used by the mapnik build, and forwarded it upstream: https://github.com/mapnik/python-mapnik/pull/64 The updated python-mapnik package will be available in unstable soon.
