The reason that it stopped working in the new version is (I think) that I changed xdg-open to not try gnome-open when running under Cinnamon, as gnome-open is obsolete and GNOME 2 only. Perhaps that was a mistake.
Still, the fallback generic mode should have worked. Apparently there is no fallback code for the GNOME/Cinnamon mode in xdg-mime. I'll have to fix that.
Ok, I guess the behavior I'm seeing now is related to added fallback code. I had exo-utils installed and due to a different bug (#757098) the behaviour of xdg-open made no sense to me, as it would always start a file manager.
I'm adding the dependency in the cinnamon-core metapackage, and also in to the cinnamon-common package that uses gvfs-open directly, but I expect to fix the latter.
