OK, mentioning icewm helped me a lot here. I tested Midori there, and I saw that the URL bar disappears when you resize the window and make it very, very small. Soon I plan to upload a new version of Midori compiled against GTK+ 3.0 (the current one uses GTK+ 2.0); I think this change could help improve things in this bug.
