I primarily spoke about empty directories here ... But since you are asking about the content you expect to be stored there: Several packages that "store user generated stuff" (e.g. databases servers) have debconf questions about removing these things on purge (check e.g. mysql). They usually default to "no" (the safe solution), but in piuparts I preseed them to "yes". Andreas
