Done. ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! If I create the /dev/hda* nodes manually and exit the shell, it boots on to the login prompt. Subsequent reboots require the same mknod hack to get the system booted. I don't know if this should be an initramfs-tools, udev or debian-installer bug.
