The garbage chars went away. Problem resolved. But I had to disable apt.sources.list.d/*.list to make it work. "apt-get update" complained
# apt-get update E: Type 'deb http://afaics.de/debian/' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/afaics.de.list E: The list of sources could not be read. Same for aptitude. Regards Harri
