Package: inkscape
Version: 0.41-1
Severity: normal

Hi.

Since I upgraded to version 0.41-1 Inkscape starts with an error
dialogue:

One or more extensions failed to load

The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue
to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable. For
details to troubleshoot this problem, please refer to the error
log located at: /home/andreas/.inkscape/extension-errors.log

This file says (in German):

Erweiterung "Sketch Input" Laden fehlgeschlagen wegen die Abhängigkeiten
konnten nicht aufgelöst werden.
Abhängigkeit::
T_yp:executable
...Speicherort: path
  Zeichenkette: skconvert

Erweiterung "Windows Metafile Input" Laden fehlgeschlagen wegen die
Abhängigkeiten konnten nicht aufgelöst werden.
Abhängigkeit::
T_yp:executable
...Speicherort: path
  Zeichenkette: wmf2svg

Erweiterung "Postscript Input" Laden fehlgeschlagen wegen die Abhängigkeiten
konnten nicht aufgelöst werden.
Abhängigkeit::
T_yp:extension
...Speicherort: path
  Zeichenkette: org.inkscape.input.sk

Erweiterung "EPS Input" Laden fehlgeschlagen wegen die Abhängigkeiten konnten
nicht aufgelöst werden.
Abhängigkeit::
T_yp:extension
...Speicherort: path
  Zeichenkette: org.inkscape.input.ps

What this means is that the extensions "Sketch Input", "Windows Metafile Input",
"Postscript Input", and "EPS Input" could not be loaded because of unresolved
dependencies. The strings given are "skconvert", "wmf2svg",
"org.inkscape.input.sk", and "org.inkscape.input.ps", respectively. The
"..Speicherort" stuff with a bare "path" given as value is incomprehensible to
me.

In Inkscape's Wiki I found something on that error in the release notes at
http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ReleaseNotes041

"Upon launch, Inkscape checks the availability of various external programs
that
are used by installed Inkscape extensions. If some are missing, you get a
warning box, and the complete list of unavailable extensions is in
~/.inkscape/extension-errors.log. Check that file and install additional
software if you find that e.g. some import/export formats do not work
(most commonly PS/EPS import which currently requires Skencil and pstoedit
to be installed)."

After installing Sketch, libwmf-bin and Dia (pstoedit was already installed),
Inkscape starts without error dialogue.

It seems that Inkscape's handling of import/export features for several file
formats has been changed, right? So, without installing the packages given above
import/export for these file formats will not work (any more).

* This should be clarified in the program description.
* Those packages should be "promoted" to "Recommends" instead of "Suggests"
status in Inkscape's dependencies, because important functionality is provided
through their use.

Additionally, the error dialogue should produce some more helpful information.
"Go, look in ~/.inkscape/extension-errors.log" may not be helpful for many
users.
If the program can write that information to this file, why can it not produce
the same information in the error dialogue? It might even be put in
understandable terms, like for example:

"
Could not start extension "Windows Metafile Input".
Reason: Program/library package "libwmf-bin" is needed but was not found.

Could not start extension "Postscript Input".
Reason: Program/libary package "pstoedit" is needed but was not found.

[...]
"

(By the way. The German translation of the error log could use some rephrasing,
it's not particularly good. Or rather, leave the error log in English, but
provide the improved error dialogue on the GUI.)

Kind regards

Andreas
