I guess you've tried to backup to a remote Samba share which wasn't configured to allow symlinks. This is by default disabled in /etc/smb.conf because it's a security issue.
You could either mount the remote share with NFS instead of SMB or use the SSH mode from Back in Time. Regards, Germar, BiT Dev-Team
