Regarding daily checks. I think you missed my point. You assume that all
people have a reliable, fast internet connection and a fast computer. That
is not always so. Many people do have a bad internet connection, something
you pay for per MB or a slow computer that you do not want to do a lot of
magic stuff on without you being involved.

This is why I did not have the link in cron.daily and this is why I think
it is disabled by default in apt.

cron-apt has daily updates included by default but scheduled to be at a
time where most people will not be disturbed in their daily work. Cron-apt
does not consider the problem of leased lines where you pay for per MB. It
do consider slow speed links and slow computers though.
