Nothing to do with tikz,
\heightof
is a macro of
calc
package.
Unfortunately, loading calc.sty does *NOT* make the following work:
> \node[text height=\heightof{A}] {c};
But breaks with a different error
\pgfmath@dimen@ ...men@@ #1=0.0pt\relax \pgfmath@
Which is well known and not a bug by itself, but a consequence of
convoluted macros.
Could you please:
* check whether the mwe *plus* loading calc.sty works in older
version?
* check whether your real world example works when loading calc.sty?
