I have a feeling that adding this conflict is likely to result in gawk just being uninstalled, and potentially taking a lot of other packages with it, during upgrades. If that's the case, it seems that the cure would be rather worse than the original disease. That said, I agree with you that just leaving gawk in a broken state is not exactly satisfactory either.
