I wasn't sufficiently clear in my report, but I was also making a
mistake. It was my belief that running font-lock-fontify-buffer in
*any* buffer causes this problem and that it didn't have to be a gnus
buffer, but I am not able to reproduce that this way. I guess the
problem must be something else. I never run font-lock-fontify-buffer
in a gnus buffer, but I do use that function from time to time for
various reasons. I will continue to hunt for the exact circumstances
that caused the problem and will update this bug as I discover more.

Anyway, the problem as I reported it with running
font-lock-fontify-buffer still seems like a bug, but one of relatively
low importance. (The software misbehaving when people do bizarre
things is still a bug, but it's not as important as the software
misbehaving when people do normal things.) Still, some normal thing
that I do is making this happen, so I'll keep hunting.

I hope you are having a good holiday of whichever variety applies. :-)
