I believe that pidgin should be compiled with support for libappindicator for it to work. I installed libappindicator1 and that didn't solve the problem. By compiling/installing https://github.com/philipl/pidgin-indicator I now do have an extra pidgin plugin and system tray support in Plasma 5. It would be great if it could be provided in Debian OOTB though.
