I upgraded systemd and systemd-sysv to 221-1 from the stretch repo. (No other systemd packages installed) I didn't do that until now because i was afraid to brick the system again. And of course the inevitable happened: It really bricked it because of this: [ *** ] A start job is running for LSB: Raising network interfaces. (24min 43s / no limit) It ran forever. After disassembling the unit, attaching serial console, etc., I was able to workaround the stucked boot and saw the same happening on shutdown. I had an open shell at this time, which led me to the stuck process: root 4026 0.0 0.2 1772 1244 ? Ss 19:21 0:00 /bin/sh -e /etc/init.d/networking stop root 4028 0.0 0.2 1708 1260 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ ifdown -a --exclude=lo -v root 4054 0.0 0.2 1772 1128 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ /bin/sh -c dhclient -v -r -pf /run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.eth0.leases eth0 root 4055 0.0 1.4 8596 7616 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ dhclient -v -r -pf /run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.eth0.leases eth0 root 4057 0.0 0.2 1772 1100 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ /bin/sh /sbin/dhclient-script root 4060 0.0 0.2 1772 1124 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ /bin/sh /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d smbd reload root 4079 0.0 0.4 4424 2556 ? S 19:21 0:00 \_ systemctl reload smbd.service Disabling /etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba made the system boot again. I didn't find an appropriate solution for this yet. Looks like i encountered the next systemd bug. :( I'll leave the system running now and see if the systemd crashes still appear.
