Package: mysql-server
Version: 5.6.25-2
Severity: normal

Today's daily update in my Sid system included a dist-upgrade of
mysql-server from 5.5 to 5.6.

    ...
    Setting up mysql-server-5.6 (5.6.25-2) ...
    Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld.
    Starting MySQL database server: mysqld.
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package mysql-server-5.6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mysql-server:
     mysql-server depends on mysql-server-5.6; however:
Package mysql-server-5.6 is not configured yet.

dpkg: error processing package mysql-server (--configure):
     dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
    Errors were encountered while processing:
     mysql-server-5.6
     mysql-server

The results of dpkg -l | grep mysql:

    ii libmysqlclient18:amd64 5.6.25-2 amd64 MySQL database client
library
    ii mysql-client-5.6 5.6.25-2 amd64 MySQL database client
binaries
    ii mysql-client-core-5.6 5.6.25-2 amd64 MySQL database core
client binaries
ii mysql-common 5.6.25-2 all MySQL database common
files, e.g. /etc/mysql/my.cnf
iU mysql-server 5.6.25-2 all MySQL database server
(metapackage depending on the latest version)
    rc mysql-server-5.5 5.5.43-0+deb8u1 amd64 MySQL database server
binaries and system database setup
    iF mysql-server-5.6 5.6.25-2 amd64 MySQL database server
binaries and system database setup
    ii mysql-server-core-5.6 5.6.25-2 amd64 MySQL database server
binaries

Running dpkg --configure does not resolve the problem:

  # dpkg --configure -a
  Setting up mysql-server-5.6 (5.6.25-2) ...
  Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld.
  Starting MySQL database server: mysqld.
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package mysql-server-5.6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mysql-server:
   mysql-server depends on mysql-server-5.6; however:
Package mysql-server-5.6 is not configured yet.

dpkg: error processing package mysql-server (--configure):
   dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   mysql-server-5.6
   mysql-server

Also the configure script presents me with the admin db root password
change dialog. I have a root password set and do not wish to change
it and therefore follow the dialog instructions and enter nothing.

Regardless of the above package configuration errors the mysql server
is running and operational. This is my Sid victim system for
discovering these types of problems. (My main desktop.) How may I
assist in improving the packaging to avoid this upgrade failure?

Bob
