The Debian system normally uses the Linux kernel as the default system
kernel. The initrd image for the current 2.6/3.x Linux kernel is
technically the initramfs (initial RAM filesystem) image. The initramfs
image is a gzipped cpio archive of files in the root filesystem.

Not true any more. See http://bugs.debian.org/790095
