Package: automake1.4
Version: 1:1.4-p6-9
Severity: important
This bug also might also apply to the other old automake packages.
automake ships the file texinfo.tex in /usr/share/automake-$version/. I
don't know what it does with it, but I guess the purpose is to copy it
into the source tree. However, the version of texinfo.tex shipped with
automake1.4 (didn't check the others, except automake1.9 which is okay
even in sarge) is buggy and does not work with texinfo/texi2dvi/etc. in
unstable.
To me it seems that the clean solution would be not to include this file
at all. Today, the texi2dvi, texi2pdf, makeinfo scripts are provided by
the (upstream) texinfo package, so on every system where this file is
useful, it is already present (installed by texinfo).
If this isn't possible, it should be updated to use the file currently
in texinfo (in unstable). Note that this is not a feature change, but
an actual bug fix, so I from the point of view of that bug the new
version should work on old systems without problems. I'm not sure,
however, whether there were any changes to the file that would also
require updates to the scripts, so that the new file might fail on old
systems. If in doubt, please ask texinfo's upstream (the Debian texinfo
maintainer doesn't know, either).
Regards, Frank
