The 2.6.8 kernel in Sarge is known to have problems with aic79xx. I have no idea when and to what extend these problems were solved in later kernel versions. This should in principle work. Probably a solvable issue with the initrd that is generated or the configuration of the bootloader. Did you try creating a separate /boot partition?
