The 2.6.8 kernel in Sarge is known to have problems with aic79xx. I have
no idea when and to what extend these problems were solved in later
kernel versions.
We, in the installer team, cannot do very much about kernel issues with
particular hardware: we just work with the kernel version we get.

This should in principle work. Probably a solvable issue with the initrd
that is generated or the configuration of the bootloader.
Did you try creating a separate /boot partition? That in general
simplifies RAID and LVM setups.

If it is really help that you want, you are probably better off asking
around on user forums or googling where you may find others who've
encountered the same problems and who may have tips on how to solve or
work around them.
