I've just upgraded my XMPP server from 8.0 to 8.1, which included the ejabberd/14.07-4+deb8u1 upgrade. I would have expected the ejabberd process to be restarted on such an upgrade and the prerm and postinst scripts indicate that this should have happened. However, after the upgrade the old process was still running. A "invoke-rc.d ejabberd stop; invoke-rc.d ejabberd start" as the maintainer scripts would do worked fine, though (minus the stray epmd from #772037, which however did not fail the start, no idea why). The machine is running systemd.
