I had the same testsuite failures reproduced on my machine in an i386 pbuilder chroot. It turned out that the chroot didn't have systemd installed, just sysvinit (because it was created some time ago and just upgraded since then). When I installed systemd in that chroot, then the testsuite ran successfully. Even an older version 215-14 was sufficient to get the testsuite to pass.
