Sure enough, removing libgl1-mesa-dri (which pulls libllvm3.5) at
least made something appear on screen after restarting gdm3:

"Oh no! something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the
system can't recover. Please log out and try again. [ Log Out ]"

Now, I'm wondering what differences between LLVM 3.4 and 3.5 could cause this.

Cheers!
