To automate this, the best solution is to ask the gdb .deb maintainers to provide something like a libgdb-dev that contains a nice libgdb.a to use. For now the packages have to be made by hand. Just build gdb and copy the static lib files (besides libgdb.a, there's one more lib you also need IIRC) to the ide directory and it should build, IIRC. I just needed packages with debugger support to put on a live CD for the IOI (International Olympiad of Informatics), where good Pascal support is pretty important. :-) So I think I wouldn't be a very good maintainer.
