Right. The problem is that if you don't specify "netbios name" in the config file, but your machine's hostname is longer than 15 characters, Samba takes it as the NetBIOS name but *does not* truncate it. This silently and near-completely breaks Samba on machines with a >15 character hostname and without "netbios name" set in smb.conf. There is no error nor warning to indicate problems beyond widespread authentication failures -- and when the failures are noticed, there is no obvious cause.
