Weird, looks as if fakeroot fails with you. Can you try: fakeroot id fakeroot ls jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.bin fakeroot dh_testroot fakeroot bash -> (and in this subshell) id, dh_testroot, ls jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.bin and submit the result to the bug?
