Package: git Version: 1:1.7.6~rc1-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream Debian’s git package has been carrying patches for honoring DNS SRV records since 1:1.7.6~rc1-1 [1]. Unfortunately, keeping these Debian-specific isn’t too helpful to anyone who might think about deploying such SRV records. In addition, the patches include quite a bit of refactoring that often conflicts with upstream development, making them hard to rebase for new upstream versions, as I’ve been discovering in the process of packaging new versions for the Ubuntu PPA [2]; I’ve reluctantly dropped them in my most recent uploads there.
The last attempt to upstream this patch set was in 2012, which apparently concluded with “It seemed nice in principle, but if I understood correctly then the API was too complicated for anyone but me to like it. Instead of an interface similar to getaddrinfo, it would probably be better to implement an interface _identical_ to getaddrinfo for the the subset of functionality that git uses.” [4] Is that still the plan?
