Hi,

My Debian installation is currently broken so I can't log in there to
look at the exact paths involved, but it's pretty much what is described
in the top post here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1270870

pasted from the above page:

      * cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
      * rm 70-no-bitmaps.conf
      * ln -s ../conf.avail/70-yes-bitmaps.conf .
      * dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
      * logout & restart X / gdm (e.g. reboot)
      * Choose font: Fixed Semicondensed 10

I initially tried with the font package whose name included someone's
initials (might have been jdm or jmk - again, I can't check because my
Debian installation is now broken).

The problem existed with the Fixed [Misc] font from the jdm/jmk font
pack (or whatever it was called) and it was only because I had the
problem there that I tried the xfonts-traditional font pack, whereupon I
ran into the same problem with the Fixed [Trad] font - in both cases,
with Regular SemiCondensed size 10.

Cheers,
Kingsley.
