Hmm.  I wonder why I can't reproduce it.  Can you tell me the exact
steps?  Maybe I'm not doing something exactly right, or maybe it
depends on the image somehow.  In your original instructions:

>  2. let A1 be in image (created from menu toolkits-image-new image)

I'm not sure I did exactly what you intended for step 3.

No problem.  I had intended to look into it further over the weekend
but ran out of time.  Even if I fail to reproduce the problem, I can
forward the bug report to John Cupitt who is (as I believe you know
from past experience) very responsive.  Maybe he'll be able to
reproduce it and fix it.  Thanks!
