While I was at it I also prepared a patch to enable pcre32, maybe there is

Thanks for this; it looks at least superficially OK to me, so I've made
an upload to experimental. I'm not going to upload to unstable until
after the freeze is over, but if in the mean time you could see if the
libpcre16 library works for you, that'd be grand.
