the bug is "still" there in gnome 2.8 even if it detects XF86Config-4 changes and ask if we want to use X or gnome keyboard settings.
I replaced "fr" by "us", then "fr" by "us,fr". In both case choosing "use X settings" (i even tried choose "gnome settings" too), did not change the gconf desktop>gnome>peripherals>keyboard>xkb entry it stayed at [fr]. I also tried the overrideSettings=True without success. There may be a problem with my tests. I am using gdmflexiserver (not in xnest else i would miss xkb support). But that should not matter much as i loggin with a different (test) user. gnome-session reask if i want to change to "x setting" at each session.
