I can confirm this bug.
Details: symptoms as above, happens on a Samsung N150 netbook. It has Intel 
Atom processor with an integrated graphics controller.
Computer is 'pingable' after it has reached the blackscreen state. I tried with 
GDM3 and Slim, both won't show up.
Now, I also confirm that recovery/control+d sequence works. I can say more: it 
is not even necessary to do that.
In my case, in grub, it suffices to edit (pressing 'e') the default chosen 
option (i.e. "Debian something..."). Then
when detailed boot parameters show up, just press F10 to boot altering NOTHING 
- and the computer boots fine, DM shows up normally.

I'm a bit puzzled and unsure where the bug really lies.
