PreDepends: nvidia-installer-cleanup but it is not installable
Let's start with that one. Try to get that installed.
Do you have contrib enabled?
Have you tried another mirror?
And yes, nvidia-driver is the right package to install (unless you have
a legacy card only supported by nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver).

I'm a moron- I apologize abjectly Andreas. I had added non-free to my
sources, but not contrib. After adding contrib,
nvidia-installer-cleanup now has a candidate, and an apt-get install
of nvidia-driver appears to be completely happy :) I normally set up
contrib when I install a new machine but forgot to do it this time.
I think this solves my issue! Thanks!
