I just did something like this (diff attached, with a bump to 0.3.3 for
an infinite loop issue:
https://github.com/hughsie/appstream-glib/issues/23). All of the reverse
build deps build just fine - the m4 interface and binary are compatible
AFAICS.

Review appreciated. I can upload to experimental if you don't mind, too.
