It's possible it's failing because there's changes that aren't in patches in 
debian/patches - I ran into this problem when making unique changes for my fork 
of the package once, so all my changes now are made as part of quilt patches - 
if changes are done in a patch it solves the "unexpected changes" problem.

Has this been looked at?
